Another week whizzes by and I thankfully am now able to rest after working 20 days out of the past 21! 💨
I did my first locum shift last week which was a bit scary! I literally turned up to a practice I’ve never been to before and had to crack on. It made me reflect on how far personally I’ve come as a vet.
Graduation day February 2020!
The learning curve after uni is exponential. The first few years fly by in a blur and you somehow come out at the end feeling slightly shell shocked but more at ease with day to day work. Even now four years later I’m doing new procedures each week and learning daily from all of my wonderful colleagues. That’s the beauty of veterinary medicine, the learning will never stop!
As a pet guardian I would recommend seeking a practice, or specifically, a vet that does want to know more. That isn’t afraid to ask others for their opinions, whether that be other colleagues or specialists. Medicine is changing daily and we have to be adaptable. To be open minded enough to realise that while one way used to be recommended, in light of new evidence, a new approach is now preferable.
I’m a big fan of surgery. Learning new procedures can be daunting but the sense of satisfaction when everything goes perfectly is almost unbeaten. These photos are just some examples of cool surgeries I have been lucky enough to perform ✅
A goose wing amputation due to a wing abnormality causing persistent pain
A ferret castration, one of many from the past few months
The raptor foot surgery I posted on insta recently
Placing oesophagostomy tubes is always fun, this little guy was so cute!
I was actually on the anaesthesia team for this procedure, it was so exciting going through the process of aquatic animal surgery!
Stay tuned this week for more posts on insta. Blaire and I have big ambitions for exotic animal education which hopefully will become apparent in the coming months….
